Ev Hales - Painting as you travel
Travelling to different countries and experiencing different cultures is an enriching experience.
Painting what you see while you travel just adds an extra layer to the whole process.
Photographing the world as you travel can provide a quick instantaneous memento of a place in time. Sitting with pen, pencil, brush in hand allows you to absorb a place and meet with the locals as they go about their daily lives.
To paint as you travel you must go slower, you see things but see more deeply. The local people react differently because they observe your interest in their world and often stop to tell you or show you something else about where they live. All of this makes for truly unique experiences. Sharing with other artists as your travel means you do not feel pressured to hurry up and get to the next church, museum or key tourist destination.
There is no way to truly evaluate such journeys.
I have travelled as a painting tutor with others who coordinate the touring aspect, so I can concentrate on the painting component. All my guides and organizers have local knowledge and close connections to the places we visit, so you get an insider view.
Janette (Paesano Tours) organizes the Italian tours, Pam and Paul, who live in Portugal and Australia ( half and half) bring a special understanding to the Moroccan and Portugal tours, Kadir A Turkish tour guide who live in Australia has family in Turkey and the keep him up to date on what is happening there and he adds hugely to our understanding of this amazing culture and the Perigord team just love their part of France and are keen to share all the un known secrets with us.
I am not sure how I came to be so lucky to be part of these teams but I have met many wonderful people over the past decade that I have been working with the overseas painting tours and guess that I will be doing this for another decade, but while I am still thoroughly enjoying the whole process I continue.
My role is to develop strategies that make the process easier and add to the skills of each artist. In Venice the place is visually busy and the task is to encourage ways to ‘see’ the situation more simply so you can get paint on paper in the time available. Discovering how to capture the essence of the architecture without spending hours drawing is a valuable tool in this location. Both colour and the use of pattern can be powerful elements to achieve this. Having time limits means you cannot be too fussy and this can be liberating as you discover just how much can be captured with a few strokes.
If you are an artist and have not tried a dedicated painting tour, then there is something missing from your travel experiences. Discover new place, new techniques and come home with enough painting material to last you a lifetime.
Of course bridges and water are an ever present element in Venice and exploring ways to translate this concisely is so valuable when you return from such a trip with thousands of images clamouring for your attention. Those quick studies remind you of the moment and aid choices for larger more considered works.
