Making a Difference
I am an artist who is passionate about Australia. I paint nature inspired oil paintings of forests, flowers, the outback, gum trees and the sea. For some time now I have been hoping to find a way to make a difference in some way, to how our beautiful Australia is cared for and to leave a better country for our children and grandchildren in which to live and grow.
When I heard the story of the plight of the tiny Leadbeater’s Possum, it tugged at my heart-strings and I knew that this was a cause I needed to support. Why not use my art to make a difference to the survival of this creature and along with it, the other animals and plants which will be nurtured in the process?
Leadbeater’s Possum is a seriously cute little animal. It lives in Victoria’s Mountain Ash forests. The possum was thought to be extinct until its re-discovery in 1961 near Marysville. Now it is on the Critically Endangered list due to loss of habitat from clear-fell logging and bushfires. Forty five percent of the Permanent Reserve System set up to protect it, was decimated in the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.
My first solo exhibition ‘Inspired by Nature’ will be held for the month of April at Eagles Nest Gallery in Aireys Inlet on the Great Ocean Road. The Gallery owner Nadia Rocchi and I have collaborated to donate 20% of the sales from this exhibition to the Friends of the Leadbeater’s Possum.
The exhibition was official opened on the 2nd April and will continue until the 25th April. So why not take a drive down to beautiful Aireys Inlet this month, view this very special art exhibition and make a difference to Victoria’s critically endangered fauna emblem?
