History of the Gawler Art Society
The Gawler Art Society was first formed in 1967, instigated by three gentlemen; Mr Tushar Kanti-Paul, Mr Gil Brown and Mr John Chambers. Mr Chambers was the Principle of the Gawler Adult Education Centre at the time. The first meeting took place on the 27th February 1967 at the Adult Education Centre Gawler. There was a good response to an advertisement placed in the Bunyip and there were nineteen members present.
In June 1967, at the Adult Education Centre’s gallery in Gawler South, the first exhibition was held. Over time the Society grew and it was decided that a permanent gallery should be found.
Dr Eastick has been the patron of the Society since the 1980’s and has always taken a keen interest. In 1988 he officially opened the Gawler Art Society’s 21st Birthday Exhibition at the Coach House Gallery.
In recent years, the Society has held Exhibitions at various Galleries in the area. Dr Eastick officially opened their 40th Birthday Exhibition at the Gawler Community gallery in 2007, several of the founding members and life members were present. The society is now looking forward to their 50th birthday in 2017.
