Group Information
The St George Art Society (SGAS) was formed in 1944 to encourage and develop the practice of art and art appreciation in the St George district. At that time, the Society’s formation members knew of no other similar body in the State of New South Wales.
In the early years, membership was restricted and selective. Prospective members were required to submit at least two paintings to be judged by a membership selection committee. Now, membership of the Society is open to all artists and anyone interested in art. The Society is now less ‘inclusive’ and more ‘innovative’ in its approach to membership as well as the practice of art.

Events
Exhibitions
Several events are organised each year with their main event being the SGAS Annual Art Show held in November.
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions during 2020 and 2021, St George held Online exhibitions as an alternation to their usual events. These were still very successful events which also helped members stay motivated during those difficult times.
In 2022 the event was back to normal and held once again in their usual location is Kogarah. For a while after the main event, it continued online giving people who were unable to attend the show, the opportunity to still make a purchase to obtain a beautiful painting created by the SGAS members.
Members are also eligible to present paintings for the Combined Art Societies of Sydney (CASS) Awards.
Tuition
Workshops
The Society also organizes several workshops, demonstrations and plein-air painting days for their members. For full details of their events, visit their website.
