Background
Camilo is an emerging artist who came to South Australia in 2008, looking for a new life and made Adelaide his home. Born in 1982 in Colombia (South America), under the mentoring of his father (Eduardo Esparza), a well-known Graphic Artist. Since an early age, Camilo was in contact with art supplies and at the age of 4 he did his first dry point etching. He did an apprenticeship at his father’s workshop: Carángano Gráfico, where he learned most of the techniques that he practices now. At the age of 16, he travelled to Europe for a year to learn languages and to visit museums and art galleries. All the art in Europe inspired him, especially the Impressionists. On his return to Colombia he enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree of Animal Sciences and graduated with honours in 2006. During this time his artistic production was minimum.
Once in Adelaide, and after 7 years of work and postgraduate studies, he felt the need to reconnect with the fine arts. The spark came back in 2014, after a long recess; this was triggered by a visit to the workshop of Hans Heysen in Hahndorf, SA. This encouraged him to go back and express his views of the world with blank canvases and oils. Camilo’s latest series: Marine World, is inspired in the marine wildlife of Australia and aquatic imaginary creatures; he wants to send an awareness message of protection of marine species, especially those endangered. Camilo believes that there is still hope in a world shared with harmony between men and nature.
Influences and Inspiration
Camilo's style is mostly contemporary, with elements of impressionism and modernism. It is a constant evolution of colourful hues and tones that entice the eye of the viewer to see beyond. His oil paintings are full of textures and layers, some people can't resist to touch them, they say "it's like 3D".
