Background
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I paint the world I see around me. My work is primarily influenced by the landscape and the beauty, shapes, subtleties, simplicities & complexities within that landscape.
I work abstractly, sometimes utilising collage & impastoed techniques with oils, acrylic & mixed media to produce bold works on canvas, board or paper.
Working intuitively I rely on shape & colour to interpret my feelings for the landscape from both an aerial perspective and close up. Lichen on stone, cracks on road surfaces, pebbles, rock pools, the patternation on rock faces & rock ledges at the edge of the ocean – these are just a few of the many sights that personally inspire me and inform my work practice.
My work grows from a process of experimentation as I attempt to break the subject matter down to the sheer essence of what I see and experience around me, rather than a literal interpretation of my subject matter.
Abstraction, although frustrating at times, is my chosen visual language and I find it gives me the freedom & satisfaction to express myself in a painterly fashion!
