Background
The study of plants, animals and painting has always interested Nola, so after retiring in 2002 from a career in education she incorporated these into her artworks. Always a keen gardener, bush walker and observer of native wildlife, Nola has been able to develop this interest to capture the living world in her art. It is the fine detail and colour, and the clarity and precision needed in this form of art illustration that forms the basis of her artwork.
Living in the Tenterfield area, Nola is able to specialise in exotic plants for cool climates and the native plants of the Northern Tablelands and Granite belt, Birds that are attracted to her extensive garden also become subjects.
By focusing on botanical and wildlife art she has become more observant and aware, and is particularly interested in the way light changes colour and tone in nature. Working in watercolour, graphite and colour pencil, she includes fine detail to display the essence of each living species.
Influences and Inspiration
Gillian Rankin (Brisbane) and David Mackay (Armidale) in particular have had most positive influences in the development of her art.
