About This Painting:
Using a compositional device detailed in Paul Klee’s notebook, the work has an underlying framework of a triangle, overlaid with a circle and two squares. This work began as a plein air work but it was blowing a gale and I nearly lost it over the cliff, heavy work too, over 10kg. Completed in the studio the work details a Mt Victoria view towards the west, a twist in the Victoria Pass with a flash of brake lights, afternoon light breaking through an eerie coloured sky dominated by a sheer rock face. Eucalypts struggle to hang on, possum scratching glows red on their bark. Impasto elements create natural or artificial light shadows for a moody feel.
