About This Painting:

Adolfo and Angel capture the extraordinary partnership between legendary Argentine polo player Adolfo Cambiaso and the remarkable polo mare Haydon Angel Jewel. Angel, an Australian-bred mare from Haydon Horse Stud, became one of the most celebrated polo horses in the world. Ridden by Cambiaso at the highest level of international polo, she competed successfully in major tournaments across the UK, USA, Argentina and Spain, and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame.

This painting portrays the athleticism, concentration and connection between horse and player that make polo such an extraordinary sport. It is a tribute to two exceptional figures of international polo — Adolfo Cambiaso and Haydon Angel Jewel.

Inspiration

This painting was inspired by the challenge of my first attempt at capturing a horse and rider in action. I wanted to push myself beyond a static equine portrait and portray the movement, energy and connection between horse and rider. An important part of the challenge was achieving the level of accuracy in both the horse and rider so that people could recognise them from my painting.
