About This Painting:
This picture is part of an ever growing collection of sketches that illustrate how highlights lift a drawing from being good to being awesome. Imagine if there was no white in this picture, or it was just drawn on white paper – it would be very impressive with great drama and menace – but adding coloured paper changes the mood and the white jumps out at you and lifts the whole face out of the paper. If the paper had been red, the expression would be angry and threatening (and who wants that hanging on their wall!). The blue paper adds an air of sadness and makes the same picture convey defensiveness or pain – it makes you want to go over and give him a hug and say “it will be all right.”
Inspiration
I love the way that coloured paper allows you to use white in a picture with equal impact to black. Having looked at many drawings over the years, it is disappointing how often the beauty of occasional sparkles and bright patches on a subject are totally overlooked because the artist gets lazy and only deals with the shadows. Darkening the paper makes these areas all the more impressive.
