About This Painting:
Kifaru is Swahili for rhinoceros, and this painting captures a beautiful moment between a mother and her young calf. Something wonderfully tender about the way they walk together—the calf close beside its mother, protected by her strength and presence. I wanted to portray the gentle bond between them and that instinctive connection that exists between a mother and her young, while still capturing the quiet power and character of these magnificent African animals.
Inspiration
While in Uganda, I arranged a private rhino viewing with my hosts. After pulling on oversized gumboots, we walked for half a mile through waist-high grass before reaching a clearing. At first I thought I could see a huge rock, but it was actually Dad rhino, standing guard and shielding Mum and their baby, who were peacefully snoozing in the afternoon shade. The experience stayed with me — the immense strength of the father, the closeness of the family and the protective instinct between them inspired me to create this painting.
