About This Painting:
I composed this painting using two reference photos from different sources for the hand positions of the musicians. I sketched the outline in watercolour pencil, then a light wash of acrylic to establish the colour balance, then I used oils, without any medium, except some linseed oil to dilute paint that was too viscous to flow easily off the brush. It was done over several sessions, possibly 12 to 15 hours of work, in stages, between weeks of drying time.
Inspiration
I am keen on classical music, especially the string pieces, and at one time I learnt violin-making and completed three violins. When I was thus engaged, I associated with string players a fair amount. I wanted to capture the feeling of cooperation between musicians as a piece of music is 'attacked' with enthusiasm.
