About This Painting:
Memorising is a vibrant abstract expressionist work that draws inspiration from the inner architecture of the brain – specifically a memory-related brain cell. A luminous central form radiates branching linear elements outward into a saturated field of deep ultramarine and cerulean, evoking the energetic pulse of a neuron firing across synaptic space. The surface is alive with textured mark-making—bursts of red and white suggest fleeting sparks of connection, while layered blues create a shifting sense of depth and cognitive immersion. Rather than literal anatomy, the piece gestures toward the psychological experience of memory: scattered fragments, suddenly illuminated, cohering into patterns.
Inspiration
I have always been fascinated by the way memory shapes who we are—how thoughts spark, fade, return, and sometimes transform completely. In Memorising, I tried to capture a moment of remembering: the instant when something hidden in the mind lights up and connects to everything else we know. The painting began as a spontaneous exploration of colour and motion, but gradually a structure emerged—something like a single brain cell sending out signals into a vast interior space. Although the image remains abstract, it reflects my belief that memory is both biological and profoundly emotional. Every remembered moment becomes part of our identity, radiating outward through a lifetime of connections.
